Black Friday can feel like a contest to see who cuts prices the most. There's a friendlier way to have a good holiday season. Make something special in a small batch, let your fans sign up early, and sell it on one launch day at full price. Below is a simple plan, with a small ceramics studio as the example.

**In one line:** A limited holiday drop is a gift-ready product you make in a set number and sell on one launch day. Open a waitlist two to three weeks before, let shoppers share it to move up the line, and email the front of the line when it goes live. A small batch that sells out lets you keep your full price.

**The quick version**

- Make a holiday version of something that already sells, in a number you can really make.
- Pick a launch day that leaves time to ship before Christmas.
- Open a waitlist two to three weeks ahead, so you know how many shoppers want one before launch day.
- Give every shopper a share link. Friends who join through it move them up the line.
- Keep your full price. Add a gift note instead of a discount, and limit each order so more fans get one.

## Why try a limited drop this holiday?

Discounts are the usual holiday plan, and they cost more than they look. Take 25% off a $40 gift and you give up $10 on every sale, even to shoppers who would have paid the full price.

A limited drop works the other way around. You make a set number of something special, tell your fans the date, and let them line up. When there are fewer gifts than shoppers who want one, nobody needs a discount to make up their mind. The waitlist also tells you how many shoppers want the product before launch day, so next year you aren't guessing how many to make.

## An example: 100 winter mugs

Say you run a small ceramics studio. Your regular mugs sell all year at $32. For the holidays you make a winter edition with a deep green glaze and a little snowflake stamp, packed in a gift box. You make 100 of them and price them at $38.

| Plan | Price per mug | All 100 sold |
|---|---|---|
| Limited drop at full price | $38 | $3,800 |
| Holiday sale at 25% off | $28.50 | $2,850 |

Selling all 100 at full price brings in $950 more than the same mugs at 25% off. If each mug costs you $12 to make and pack, that $950 is more than a third of what you keep.

The studio's plan looks like this:

- **November 12:** Take a nice photo of the mug and open the waitlist, with a launch time of December 3 at 6 pm.
- **The next three weeks:** Share the waitlist link in the newsletter and on Instagram, and show it on the mug's product page.
- **December 3 at 6 pm:** The drop goes live. The first 100 shoppers in line get an email with a link to buy, and each order is limited to 2 mugs.
- **After it sells out:** Thank everyone and tell them when the next batch is coming.

## Step 1: Pick something gift-ready

Start with something that already sells and make a holiday version of it. Your shoppers already like it, and you already know how to make it. Change one thing for the season, like a color, a scent, a pattern or the box it comes in. Then make it ready to give. A gift box or a note card saves the buyer a job, and it's a good reason to buy from you instead of a big store.

Check that it ships well. Something that breaks or melts in the mail is a headache in December, when carriers are at their busiest.

## Step 2: Choose a number you can really make

Limited only works when it's true. Pick the number you can make and pack before launch day without working every night, and say it plainly: "100 winter mugs, and that's all."

If you aren't sure, start smaller. Selling out of 60 feels better for everyone than having 40 left over in January, and the waitlist shows you how many to make next year.

## Step 3: Pick a launch day that ships in time

Look up your carrier's last shipping day for Christmas (USPS, UPS and FedEx post their holiday dates each fall) and count back. Leave yourself a week or more to pack and ship every order.

Aim for early December. By then Black Friday (November 27 this year) and Cyber Monday (November 30) are over, and there's still time to ship. Pick a time your fans can show up, like an evening after work.

## Step 4: Open the waitlist two to three weeks early

A waitlist lets fans raise their hand before launch day. They leave their email and get a spot in line. When the drop goes live, they hear first.

Share the link wherever your customers already see you: your newsletter, your Instagram bio, a pinned post and the product page in your store. If your list is small, our guide to [building a pre-launch email list](https://ezdrop.app/blog/how-to-build-pre-launch-email-list-shopify) has more ideas.

Give shoppers a reason to share it. With EZDrop, everyone who joins gets their own link, and each friend who joins through it (and confirms their email) moves them up the line. A fan who brings three friends gets closer to the front, and you get three more shoppers on your list without paying for an ad.

Then watch the count grow. If 300 shoppers join for 100 mugs, the mugs are likely to go quickly, and you have a good reason to make more next year.

## Step 5: Launch day

When the drop goes live, the shoppers at the front of the line get an email with a link straight to the product. Publish the product in your store before then, with the right price and stock count. Our [drop day checklist](https://ezdrop.app/blog/shopify-drop-day-checklist) covers the last few hours.

Set a limit per order, like 2 mugs. It stops one buyer from taking 20, so more of your fans get one.

Once the drop launches, the waitlist closes to new sign-ups. Thank everyone on social media, and point fans who missed out to your newsletter so they hear about the next batch first.

## Money tips for a holiday drop

- **Keep your full price.** Every mug sold at $38 brings in $9.50 more than one sold at 25% off, and a small batch leaves less to clear in January.
- **Add something small instead of a discount.** A handwritten note or a bit of gift wrap costs you little and makes the gift feel special.
- **Offer free shipping above a set amount** if your margins allow it, so shoppers have a reason to add a second item.
- **Make only what you can sell.** Stock that doesn't sell is cash you can't spend on the rest of the season.
- **Keep the list.** Everyone who joined wants to hear from you. Export it and invite them to your next drop.

## What if it doesn't sell out?

It can happen, especially with a first drop, and a small batch keeps that risk small. Move what's left into your store as a regular product, or pair it with a best seller as a gift set.

Then look at how many shoppers joined the waitlist and how many bought. EZDrop's analytics page shows sign-ups by day, so you can see which post brought the most.

## How EZDrop helps

EZDrop is a Shopify app for limited drops and waitlists. Each drop gets:

- A drop page with your photo and a countdown to launch day
- A spots-left bar once the first few shoppers join

- A badge on your product page, so store visitors can join too
- An email to the front of the line when the drop goes live, at the time you set or when you click Launch

When you open the waitlist, EZDrop can also email your store's newsletter subscribers to invite them, if you say yes. Growth invites up to 100 subscribers and Pro up to 5,000.

## Questions shop owners ask

### What is a limited holiday drop?

A limited holiday drop is a special product made in a set number and sold on one launch day for the holidays. Shoppers join a waitlist ahead of time and hear first when it goes live. Because the batch is small, it can sell out without a discount.

### How many should I make for a holiday drop?

Make the number you can produce and pack before launch day without rushing. If you aren't sure, start smaller. The waitlist count shows you how many shoppers wanted one, so you can make more next time.

### When should I open a holiday waitlist?

Two to three weeks before launch day. That gives shoppers time to find it and share it, without so much time that they forget. For a December 3 launch, open the waitlist around November 12.

### Do I need to offer a discount on a limited drop?

No. A small batch is meant to sell out at full price. If you'd like to add something extra, a gift note or gift wrap costs you less than a discount and still feels like a treat.

### What happens on launch day?

When the drop goes live, EZDrop emails the shoppers at the front of the line with a link to the product, and the waitlist closes to new sign-ups. You choose how many get that email, and you can limit how many each order can include.

### How much does EZDrop cost?

EZDrop has two plans. Growth is $19 a month for up to 5 drops at a time, and Pro is $49 a month for unlimited drops and sign-ups. Both start with a 7-day free trial, and you can cancel any time.
